Activities to help plan your vacation days...
There's always lots to see and do and all sorts of colourful ways
to do it around the lighthouse. First on your list should be to
explore the historic lighthouse and enjoy the view. Have a meal in our dining
room or walk on the beach. The craft shop is located next to the lighthouse and operated by the Lighthouse Craft Guild. Many of our items, made locally, are fine reminders of an Island visit.
In the immediate vicinity we have
swimming, trout and smelt fishing, berry picking, beachcombing, clamming, horseback riding, tandem and ten speed
bicycling. Take a pleasant stroll through the wooded trails observing wildflowers such as the beautiful and fragile lady slipper. At the adjacent
Cedar Dunes Provincial Park there's camping and picnicking and the same un-crowded, unspoiled sandy beach that
passes for miles in front of the lighthouse. Activities here include a playground,
children's program,
nature trails and interpretive program. Lifeguards are on
duty. Several evenings
each week there are songs and stories around a campfire.
After you have acquainted yourself with the lighthouse area you may want to explore the surrounding area by car.
There's a certain excitement in discovering for yourself, but we'll give you a few suggestions. You'll find incomparable views of the ocean from nearby high capes, so take your camera along. Make a stop at the town of O'Leary and visit the
Potato Museum or the
Quilt Gallery. A short distance from O'Leary is the
Mill River Fun Park for kids of all ages. Beside the Fun Park is
Mill River Provincial Park with Golf, Tennis, Aquaplex Fitness Centre, Marina, Sports Fishing and more.
Just down the road from the Mill River Provincial Park is MacAusland's Woolen Mill. . .stop in and see blankets being made. As you talk to the friendly local people you'll discover more and more things to do.
Throughout the summer many festivals and events occur in
o ur area. Here in West Point the
Lighthouse Festival is held the third weekend in July. For details of festivals and events throughout the Island we
suggest you pick up the events brochure published annually by Prince Edward Island Tourism, available from any Visitor Information Centre. If you'd like to just take it easy around the Lighthouse feel free to relax in our lounge with
colour TV, VCR, Stereo and piano. Browse through the hundreds of lighthouse pictures or postcards displayed in albums or on the walls throughout the lighthouse. Feel free to add your lighthouse photograph or postcard to our collection. Curl up in the twilight hours in our cozy lounge and browse through our modern and antique books and learn about lighthouses throughout the world. Talk to our staff about the
